Conserving Our Paper Heritage Wednesday March 17, 2010 Brown Bag Lecture
Conserving Our Paper Heritage
Historic works on paper (documents, prints, posters, etc) serve as important records of the places, events and people that have shaped our world. In 2008, The Westmoreland acquired the Joy and R. David Brocklebank Fraktur Collection. Fraktur is the German word that refers to a stylized, highly decorative watercolor or watercolor-and-ink painting often bearing elaborate calligraphy and standardized motifs. This collection of over 250 German folk-art documents consist mainly of birth and baptismal records (geburts and taufschein) but also include house blessings, writing examples and narratives. These works contain the genealogical record of the early immigrants to our region.

Please join paper conservator Janet English Heller as she describes the painstaking process of assessing and repairing these delicate documents as the museum prepares to make them available for public view. You'll also learn some tips on how to properly care for and display your own valuable paper treasures.

Conservator Janet English Heller holds a B.A. in Art History and Chemistry from Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH and an M.A., Certificate of Advanced Study in Art Conservation from the State University of New York in Cooperstown. She has worked as a conservator for the Intermuseum Laboratory in Oberlin, the Pacific Rim Conservation Center in Honolulu, HI, and the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. In 1994 she founded Special Collections Conservation Services, Inc. (SCCS) specializing in the conservation of paper and parchment. She has been a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation since 1992.

The 1930s: A Decade of Change Thursday March 25, 2010 Thursday Evenings at the Westmoreland
The 1930s: A Decade of Change
Collector Jason Schoen will host a gallery talk of his exhibition, Concerning the 1930s in Art: Paintings from the Schoen Collection. Schoen will share his perspective on American art created in the 1930s, his personal experiences about living with his collection, and the relationships he developed with the artists whose work he collected. The first painting of the Depression era entered the personal collection of Schoen in 1979, and marked a turning point in the way he collected art of the period. "My goal was to create a collection of regional art which seen in its totality can serve as a study collection and introduction to an era, as a slice of life and a window onto an important period in American art."

Schoen has a B.A. degree in art history from the University of Texas. He attended one of the first symposiums on social-realism under Ken Prescott and has done graduate American Art studies at the University of Arizona, Tucson. He chose the University of Arizona because of the Leonard C Pfeiffer Collection, one of the most important collections of American scene paintings at a university museum. His personal collection, Coming Home, American Art 1930-1950, has been exhibited at seven museums in the south. Schoen has lectured on American scene painting at Telfair Museum of Art, Savannah, Ga.; Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia; Lowe Art Museum, The University of Miami; Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville, Tenn. He has vigorously pursued his passion for collecting American art of the 1930s and 1940s for more than 25 years. Free program.

When Art Worked: The New Deal, Art, and Democracy
Historian Roger G. Kennedy will discuss the New Deal's mobilization of artists, including filmmakers, painters, photographers, landscape designers, architects, and composers who were responsible for bringing the nation together during the Great Depression. He is the author of a new book with the same title, "When Art Worked: The New Deal, Art and Democracy" published in 2009, and will be available for a book signing following his lecture.

Born in St. Paul, Minn., in 1926, Kennedy received his B.A. degree from Yale University and his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School. He was also a White House correspondent for NBC, appearing on his own NBC radio series and in the first NBC television documentaries. In the 1960s, Kennedy was chairman of the Executive Committee of the Northwestern Bank of St. Paul, Minn., before becoming vice president of investments for the University of Minnesota. In 1970, he became vice president of finance at the Ford Foundation and in 1978 was made vice president of the arts.
